Thursday, 10 September 2009 |
Durban is vastly under-represented on the national arts scene and Spier offers a great opportunity to change that. Please think about the work you are engaged with and send this to as many people as possible so we can get Durban on the contemporary art map.
Spier Contemporary will be holding another Q&A session for artists in KwaZulu Natal on the 18 September, from 12 at the DUT gallery and adjacent lecture theatre. Please attend to get more details. This session should inspire anyone working in creative fields in Durban.
The Spier Contemporary 2010 has opened its call to all artists living in South Africa to begin thinking about how they would like to reflect their experiences, aspirations and visions through new work submitted to this competition/exhibition. *The deadline for submissions is the 30th October 2009.

Do It Day appeals for social activists |
|

Friday, 31 July 2009 |
Individuals from across South Africa will be taking part in the largest
ever day of social activism on the 18th of September 2009, not only
offering help to those in need, but also empowering themselves by
giving back.
Non-profit networking organisation, GreaterGood SA has challenged
individuals across South Africa to take action and offer support to
their communities on Do It Day.
GreaterGood SA aims to mobilise 'Team South Africa' and recruit a
record 20 000 volunteers working on 2 000 projects this year, providing
a huge range of options, so that each volunteer can find something that
appeals to them.
The day is an opportunity for all South Africans, including
school-goers who may be too young to vote, but who want to make a
difference in their community, to make a positive impact on the people
around them. Do It Day could also open the door to new possibilities
and offer the opportunity to make new friends and build networks in
your community.
The campaign is seen by GreaterGood SA as a powerful, symbolic tool for
change that has the potential to promote sustainable, long-term
relationships between volunteers and causes and transform mindsets
about giving. The event, for individuals and corporates alike, promotes
teamwork, offers strong motivation, demonstrates the virtue of hard
work and supports good causes in communities across South Africa
To participate, individuals and groups can sign up online at doitday.co.za for a project in their area to volunteer for on the 18th of September.

ACT Information Sharing and Networking Seminar |
|

Sunday, 28 June 2009 |
The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT)
invites arts, culture and heritage organisations and individual
practitioners to join us for an ACT Information Sharing and Networking
Seminar on Saturday 25 July 2009 at 10:30 at the Catalina Theatre in
Durban.
ACT has a proud track-record of
playing a strategic role in the arts and culture sector consistently
for fifteen years. More than just a funding agency, ACT has evolved
into a dynamic organisation which continuously pioneers and executes
with excellence in supporting creativity for the benefit of all South
Africans.
Given the climate of intense creativity in South Africa the demands are
enormous and funding bodies do not always serve the arts and culture
sector consistently and effectively. As the oldest funding agency in
democratic South Africa, The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has
consistently sought to play a strategic role in the arts, culture and
heritage sectors of South Africa. As a sustainable trust ACT's core
mandate is to build reserves for the future in the long-term whilst
supporting a range of arts, culture and heritage projects in the
short-term. How does ACT balance this long-term vision with the short
term needs of the sector? ACT's funding policies and assessment
criteria in the context of the contemporary South African arts funding
landscape will also be discussed.
